Waikanae Surf Life Saving Club
Sand, sun and surf are inevitable in this two-storied, new-build sports facility two steps from the beach.
With top storey natural timber cladding and driftwood-like, mixed-height stairs and balustrades, the building blends with and responds to its coastal environment. Much-needed storage space for lifesaving equipment has easy access. Sharing the upstairs with a games room and gym, the clubroom provides unencumbered views of the whole bay and popular Oneroa Walk and Cycleway.
The beach and club are brightly reflected in the yellow central lift and blue doors. Carpet tiles, made from recycled fishing nets, drift from sand to blue – the material selection approach being eco-consciously green.
Painted concrete slabs and aluminium joinery make downstairs robust and easy to clean.
