From the outset this building had to be uniquely Tairāwhiti. The design is deeply grounded in a design narrative generated by mana whenua.

Shaped by ongoing collaboration between clinicians, local iwi, and the design team the finished facility is inclusive, respectful, functional and community-focused.

Some key design highlights include:

  • Biophilic / Iwi based design driving the extensive connection to nature and natural materials

  • Custom designed whariki and tukutuku patters which are integrated into floor wall and ceiling designs

  • Hand-carved timber Putorino pou

  • A magnificent stainless steel entry Putorino pou water feature

  • Site specific landscape design re-establishing a lot of the original plants that would have been on the site prior to the Hospital being there

This project is designed to the Living Building Challenge Core Green and Net Zero energy programmes, representing a significant step forward for sustainable design in Tairawhiti.

  • The building produces all its own power

  • Collects roof water and re-uses its greywater

  • Is super insulated to bring down air-conditioning costs and raise thermal comfort

  • The primary structure has 20% less embodied carbon than standard building, and 50% less embodied carbon in the interior fit-out.

More than a health facility, Te Whare Awhi Ora is a place of belonging and holistic recovery, designed to support tangata whaiora on their journey to wellness, today and into the future.
