New work on an architecturally awarded building by pre-eminent Gisborne architect Colin Pilbrow can prove challenging at the best of times. Alterations and extensions need to work and harmonise with the original.
The two more recent of four projects for this longstanding client were to expand and revitalise the entranceway and to create a new Jack Richards Gallery and archive extension. The first focused on light, and a sense of welcoming and openness; the second on strict enclosure, atmospheric control, security, stability and a neutral canvas for which to display art and taonga. Two quite different projects.
Both proved sympathetic to the original Pilbrow design, particularly with function as the focus.
