Contemporary and traditional blend in this off-the-grid redevelopment of a traditional marae at the foot of the Wharerata Ranges.
This warm, natural wharenui is Stage 1 of a two-stage redevelopment that will include an extremely open and light wharekai (dining hall) – a mirror image of the wharenui itself.
A woven whariki or floor mat from an earlier building on site was digitised to effect a modern carpet, seemingly woven in a traditional manner. The completed project will see a strong connection between the buildings and the whenua while respecting the hierarchy of each.
Creating a complex, off-the-grid electric system was no mean feat considering the needs of a major marae gathering.
