LearnKaiti School Classroom
Teachers and students applaud their wharenui-like building where learning is comfortable and cool. The building’s exterior blends in with its neighbours in size, tone and colour but its interior is quite different -- open plan, two flexible learning spaces, three breakout spaces, one of them like a small amphitheatre, glass doors and a cacophony of colour.
The design provides for a new pedagogy, reflects the mainly Maori students’ culture and supports learning preferences. Bean bags, carpet, steps and even desks provide a variety of places for students to comfortably focus on learning.
Its whare style, reflected in the central ridge, wide sloping roof and verandah pou, allows collaboration between larger groups of children inside and out.
The design has been so successful the school expects to repeat it with its next new learning spaces.
